AL Petteway DVD Celtic Blues and Beyond
from a former student of ALís
"AL - I think the DVD is one of the best things I've seen and heard. it was
honestly just like sitting in the room at Fairewood. very, very cool. also
prompted me to revisit a few things in my own playing and several new tunes
have resulted. just what I needed."
Al Petteway Celtic Blues and Beyond Instructional DVD 2005
Solid Air Records
Al Petteway is a well-known guitarist and composer. He plays as well Celtic,
blues and folk guitar. He released several CD's and books and now there
is a new DVD called Celtic, Blues and Beyond. This DVD contains 6 songs,
Eureka Hotel, Meant to Be, She Moved through the Fair, Smokey Mountain
Morning, Spindrift and The West Wind and 2 bonus tracks E Funk and After
Dark. The DVD contains a menu with several options. You can watch the
full DVD with multi camera angles which you can view with your remote
control to watch all the 6 lessons with explanations about the tunes. So
you can switch between the right hand technique and with a click one
can also see the left hand techniques used and the overall view . Al focuses
a lot on the DADGAD tuning but also on the standard tuning. What makes
this DVD so special is that you get an acoustic master class with an in depth
analyzes of all the songs like techniques, modes and a private lesson of one
of the best players. Also from the menu one can select the performance part
separately from the master class part. Also included is a bio and extra info
about the released CD's. There is no tablature on this DVD. For players who
have no perfect pitch, one can buy a complete guitar tablature book/CD which
includes al the songs from this DVD. Some skills in DADGAD tuning are also
adviced. The demonstrations on the DVD take the mystery out of the brilliantly
propulsive pieces, which are full of multiple-string hammer-ons, fast walking
bass lines, and percussive slaps. The sound and DVD quality are really
superb. What a tablature and note book can't explain is shown here in
in-depth analyzes. An intermediate level is therefore adviced.
