If you’re a fan of fine-tuned harmonies and songs rich in melody and invention, don’t miss out on The Power of Two. Well know
guitarist/instructor Mark Hanson teams up with the ever-popular Doug
Smith on thirteen tracks of glistening guitar work. Not only is this
the tallest partnership in our Groovemasters duo series, but it’s one
which reminds us of some of the better outings of Bert Jansch and John
Renbourn.
In the artist's words...
Ever since our first recording experiences in the
‘70s, we have been aware of the power of two acoustic guitars played
together. The sonic richness, in particular the amplification of
overtones afforded by two high-quality acoustic guitars played by top-flight players, is an aural delight. With that
understanding, we embarked on this strictly instrumental two-guitar
recording project. Through the generous and enthusiastic support of
James Jensen at Solid Air Records, the album came to fruition in the
autumn of 2001. Of the 13 tracks included, 11 are our own compositions.
Several of the tunes were composed together, with the title track,
“Power of Two,” being the first collaborative effort. In other cases, a
second guitar part was added to an already existing tune. Whatever the
compositional process, these duets work beautifully. We hope that you
enjoy the instrumentals on this recording. We had a great time
composing and recording them.

Doug Smith and Mark Hanson, Power of Two. SACD 2027 CD
Fingerstyle guitarists Mark Hanson and Doug Smith are
good friends who have played together for some time,
but this is the first time they have composed and
arranged an entire CD of duets together. Hanson's
contributions reflect his eclectic interests, from the
languid Hawaiian slack-key piece "Waimea Canyon" to
the lively jig "Ryan Time." Fans of Smith's solo work
will enjoy the pastoral "Confluence" and the jazzy and
mysterious "The Long Wait." The playing is first-rate,
but the seamless interplay of the two guitars is what
makes this CD shine. (Solid Air,
