GUITAR WORLD ACOUSTIC
"As both a consumate fingerpicker and a former member of Paul
McCartney and Wings (1978-1981), Laurence Juber is well-qualified to
create an album of solo acoustic guitar arrangements of Beatles
favorites. And he does a bang-up job on the 14 classics included
here. From his rollicking take on "I saw Her Standing There" to
his soulful rendition of " Let It Be", Juber succeeds in retaining the
hooks, musical ingenuity and charm of the original songs original
melodies, Juber's superior technique and tone ensure that this is not
just another round of Muzak Meets the Beatles. The big payoff is
the albums final track "Can't Buy Me Love", where Juber allows himself
the luxury of an impressionistic, truly personal and extremely cool
arrangement.

LJ Plays the Beatles SACD 2001 CD
Laurence has a couple of other releases coming soon. The most important is
a fantastic collection, called LJ Plays The Beatles, with Laurence playing
some favorite - and difficult - Beatles tunes, something he's also famous
for at his many appearances at Beatlefests over the years. All are played
on a single acoustic guitar, with no backup instruments, though, when
listening, you'd swear Laurence is actually playing 3 or 4 guitars! The
master musician clearly does the work of a handful of guitarists, playing
bass lines, rhythm, lead and a melody in one sitting, something which, for
most performers, is physically impossible.
The disc, which was recorded at Laurence's home studio and produced by his
wife, Hope, features 14 tracks, most of which avoid the well-worn territory
of other cover albums. Highlights include a beautiful "While My Guitar
Gently Weeps," "Here Comes the Sun," "Martha My Dear," "Oh! Darling," "For
No One" (including a guitar version of Alan Civil's horn solo!) and a bluesy
version of "You Won't See Me." "I've always considered that to be a blues
song," he tells GDS. "There's a two-note guitar figure that I play towards
the end that Paul had showed me, which was actually the basis of the song."
The piece de resistance of the album is a remarkable performance of
"Strawberry Fields Forever" (again, all played on one guitar), with nearly
every nuance of the original recording.

LAURENCE JUBER “LJ Plays the BEATLES” review SACD 2001 CD
”Fingerstyle master Laurence Juber manages to transpose to guitar an
astonishing amount of the music orginally present on these 14 Fab Four
faves. the harmonies , bass lines, chords, and fills are virtually
intact on his reading of “Strawberry Fields” and many other
arrangements. But what’s more impressive is that Juber, while
maintaining the musical substance of the originals , manages to give
most of these pieces an inntriguing new life by imbuing them with his
own potent musical ideas. Highlights include his swingy
jazz/blues take on “Can’t buy Me Love” and an impassioned improvisation
on “while my guitar Gently Weeps”. (Solid Air Records).
