Classic guitarist Benjamin Verdery and folk / celtic / New Age
Master William Coulter combine their talents on this
svelte piece of duo guitarmanship called Song for Our Ancestors. The
result of the Coulter/Verdery combination is a truly unique and
appealing musical concoction and truly masterful recording reveals more
layers with each listen.
In the artist's words...
“You guys must do an album together!” exclaimed
master guitar maker Jeff Traugott after hearing two duos on Bill’s CD
Celtic Sessions.
From the beginning we always loved the blend of
the classical and steel string and had already begun to explore what
the two playing traditions had to offer each other. There is no limit
to the melodies that are in the air. For example, Bill would play
“Drops of Brandy” and I would do a silly dance and begin to write
another part. In the case of “Muiñeira DeChantada/Saint-Saëns” it
seemed ridiculous to sandwich the melody from Saint-Saëns Symphony No.
3, fourth movement melody in-between a Galician pipe melody, but
somehow we felt it worked. Bill and I did what musicians have done for
centuries: we simply set melodies for our respective instruments in the
only way that we knew how at that moment. Whether the melody is from
Tibet or Ireland we hope you hear the love and respect we have for the
tune.
