“California Guitarist Kenny Sultan has been making
good-time acoustic blues recordings with partner Tom Ball for 20 years.
On WEST COAST BLUES, Sultan steps out on his own with an
all-instrumental effort that spans the spectrum of unplugged blues,
from the monotonic bass of Lightning Hopkins to the 12-string slide of
Bo Carter. Sultan uses the old masters as jumping off points, injecting
jazzy chords and improvisational fl ourishes into simple motifs.
There’s nothing too showy here, just fl uid grooves and a slew of very
tasty licks.”

When we started brainstorming for this record, the first
thing that came out was, “keep it funky and play from the heart.” This
CD was recorded in a couple of days in a remote, though state of the
art studio in the mountains north of Seattle, Washington. There were no
overdubs, no editing, no tricks, and, most tracks were laid down within
a couple of takes. I figure, get a couple of great engineers, great old
guitars, great old studio equipment, (we went live to 2-track using old
tube technology), good beer and what else do you need to make a soulful
record?
This is a little different from the many CDs I have done
with Tom Ball, my partner of 20 years and a fine harmonica player,
guitarist, and vocalist. Tom and I have always included a couple of
instrumental tracks on each of our CDs but never recorded an entire
instrumental album. This music is played as if I were sitting on my
couch around midnight playing for myself. I hope you enjoy it.
